HPA’s top spellers advance to district

Eighth-graders Ana Henderson and Lily Ameika were the co-champions in this year’s Hawaii Preparatory Academy spelling bee. Thirty-four students in grades 5-8 recently participated. Ana and Lily advance to the Hawaii Island District Spelling Bee. The winner of the district competition will represent Hawaii Island at the state spelling bee.

Distance learning sessions planned

Three representatives from the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s College of Education will provide information about its distance learning programs for those interested in becoming licensed K-12 teachers.

All sessions will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 3, at Hawaii Community College, Building 379, Room 1 (Kaneikeao Room). From noon-1 participants can learn about the five different licensure programs available via distance education.

The information will be repeated from 5-8 p.m. with additional detailed question-and-answer sessions about the Special Education and Master of Education in Teaching programs.

Brand reputation workshop in Kona

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo hosts a workshop in Kona on managing one’s online business reputation from 1-4 p.m. Friday on the Palamanui Campus, Room B-125.

The cost is $35, or $25 for Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce members.

“Reputation Management for Visitor Industry Businesses” is taught by Denise Laitinen and will teach participants how to proactively monitor the online reputation of their business/brand.
